Tanzania’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo met on Thursday with Daishiro Yamagiwa, Secretary General of the African Friendship Parliamentary League in Japan’s parliament, to discuss strengthening bilateral ties on the sidelines of the TICAD 9 summit in Yokohama.

The talks centered on cooperation in digital transformation, healthcare, human resource development and strategic infrastructure projects through public-private partnerships.

Kombo and Yamagiwa also agreed to align positions on global issues in international forums to advance shared interests.

Food security was a major topic, with both parties emphasizing the need to boost agricultural production, improve storage systems and expand export markets.

Japan and Tanzania aim to deepen collaboration in agricultural value chains to ensure sustainable supply and market access.

Tanzania will also take part in the 2027 International Horticulture Expo, known as Green Expo, in Yokohama.

The event is expected to open trade and technology exchange opportunities for Tanzanian horticulture producers and businesses seeking to access Asian and global markets.

The meeting underscores Japan’s growing engagement with African nations through TICAD, a forum that promotes African development partnerships.

For Tanzania, it signals a push to leverage Japanese technology and investment to modernize key sectors, while Japan seeks to secure food resources and strengthen political ties in Africa.

By focusing on digitalization, agriculture and strategic projects, both sides aim to translate diplomatic dialogue into concrete economic cooperation.
