The turnaround time for ships at Tanga Port in northern Tanzania has dropped from five days to two after a TZS 429.1 billion (\$164 million) upgrade, official data shows

The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) said the investment, carried out in two phases over four years under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, has boosted efficiency and cargo volumes.

The number of vessels handled at Tanga rose to 307 in 2025 from 198 in 2021, while cargo throughput increased to 1.19 million tonnes from 888,130 tonnes.

Container traffic grew to 7,817 units from 7,036 over the same period.

Officials say the port improvements have raised revenue and created both permanent and temporary jobs.

Separately, Tanga Region received TZS 1.1 billion for the rehabilitation of MV Tanga ferry, aimed at improving transport services for residents.
