Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, has conducted a thorough inspection of major expansion works at the Dege, Gongolamboto, and Ubungo power substations in Dar es Salaam.
These projects are critical to enhancing electricity supply reliability and meeting the growing power demand in Dar es Salaam, the Coast Region, and neighboring areas.
During the inspection, Mr. Twange expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress of the projects, emphasizing their strategic importance in securing stable electricity for millions of residents and businesses.
At Dege Substation, the upgrade involves installing a new transformer with a capacity of 120MVA, doubling the previous 60MVA capacity.
The project also includes constructing 33kV distribution lines to extend power reach. The works have achieved 56 percent completion and are expected to be finalized by April 2026.
Meanwhile, Gongolamboto Substation is undergoing capacity enhancement from 50MVA to 125MVA, with implementation at 80 percent.
At Ubungo, a major upgrade is underway through the installation of a 300MVA transformer, significantly boosting the substation’s ability to handle demand.
“These expansions are vital for guaranteeing a reliable and sufficient power supply to Dar es Salaam and the surrounding regions,” said Mr. Twange. “TANESCO is focused on strengthening infrastructure to meet both current and future energy needs, especially in economically active areas like Dar es Salaam.”
He highlighted the city’s critical role as a major revenue contributor to both the government and TANESCO, noting that dependable electricity is essential to sustaining economic activities, social services, education, and healthcare.
Mr. Twange praised the engineering teams and project supervisors for their professionalism and dedication amid challenging conditions, noting that the projects are progressing according to contractual timelines.
“I am confident that once these projects are completed, the ongoing electricity supply challenges, particularly in areas like Kigamboni, will be resolved,” he assured.
He further explained that the upgrades at Gongolamboto and Ubungo will extend reliable power distribution beyond Dar es Salaam to include the Coast Region and neighboring areas, ensuring broader regional benefit.
Concluding the visit, Mr. Twange reaffirmed TANESCO’s commitment to enhancing power infrastructure promptly to improve service delivery and meet growing customer demand.
