Rungwe District reports higher crop yields as farmers embrace modern practices

Rungwe District Council in Mbeya Region says crop production has improved consistently in recent years, thanks to government subsidies on farm inputs and enhanced agricultural extension services.

Majaliwa Mwalembe, an official from the district’s agriculture office, said on August 6, 2025, that most farmers in the area have started adopting better farming practices, including soil testing and the use of improved seeds.

He was speaking during the Nane Nane agricultural exhibitions taking place at John Mwakangale grounds in Mbeya.

He said the district grows a wide range of food and cash crops, including bananas, maize, sweet potatoes, yams, beans, coffee, tea, and cocoa.

He added that the yields of most crops have increased over the years due to improved farming knowledge and input support.

“For example, potato production rose from 595,313 tonnes in 2021 to 624,278 tonnes in 2025. This progress is the result of farmers following proper farming guidelines. One of the most effective practices is testing the soil before planting,” said Mwalembe.

He explained that soil testing helps farmers identify which nutrients are lacking, allowing them to use the right fertilizers.

Extension officers have also been advising farmers to choose seed varieties that produce higher yields and are resistant to diseases.

Mwalembe said improved farming has boosted household incomes across the district and contributed about 75 percent of council revenue. The money has supported local development, including the construction of health centres and dispensaries. He noted that many farmers are now able to build better houses and send their children to school.

Atuganille Juma, a potato farmer from Kiwira Ward, said his farming techniques have changed significantly following training from agricultural officers.

“Before, I used to grow crops without knowing what the soil needed. Now I do soil testing, use quality seeds, and the harvest has improved. My life has changed,” he said.

Lenatus Mpatili, the District Trade Officer, said Rungwe produces a large variety of high-quality crops, including potatoes and bananas. He said the district attracts traders from other regions who come to buy directly from farmers.

He described agriculture as a reliable business in Rungwe, creating income opportunities and driving the local economy.
