The government has extended its modern beekeeping programme to traditional chiefs in Rukwa Region, handing over more than 200 beehives as part of efforts to expand honey production and create new economic opportunities.

The initiative, implemented by the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, is aligned with the national programme known as “Achia Shoka, Kamata Mzinga” (Drop the Axe, Take the Beehive), which promotes conservation while increasing community incomes.

Speaking during the handover in Sumbawanga District, Deputy Permanent Secretary responsible for Conservation, Commissioner of Police Benedict Wakulyamba, said the plan targets to raise honey production from 33,861 tonnes per year to 75,000 tonnes by June 2035.

“This programme directly supports President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s efforts to uplift communities economically through natural resource conservation, especially in forestry and beekeeping,” said CP Wakulyamba.

“At the same time, the President has continued to attract investment in forestry, beekeeping, antiquities, wildlife, and tourism, which we strongly commend.”he added

He urged the chiefs and residents to work with ministry experts in adopting modern beekeeping practices and ensuring sustainable resource management.

He further directed TFS to strengthen forest reserve protection while promoting tourism in protected areas.

Rukwa Regional Administrative Secretary, Msalika Makungu, said the region currently hosts 5,710 modern hives, 2,251 traditional hives, and 3,736 beekeepers.

“The ministry’s efforts will reinforce beekeeping in Rukwa, boosting both production and livelihoods,” he said.

Acting Director of Forestry and Beekeeping, Daniel Pancras, highlighted that the sector employs nearly 2 million Tanzanians, including producers, processors, and traders of honey and related equipment.

“With more support, the industry can create additional opportunities and become a stronger contributor to the national economy,” he added.
