Electricity has now reached 1,997 hamlets in Kilimanjaro Region, representing 88.4% of the total 2,260 hamlets, thanks to projects led by the Rural Energy Agency (REA).

All 519 villages in the region are now connected, marking a major milestone in rural electrification.

Ambassador Retired Major General Jacob Kingu, Chairman of the Rural Energy Board (REB), made the announcement today during a visit to Hai District, where he observed ongoing electrification work and engaged with contractors implementing REA projects.

“REA is accelerating rural electrification across Kilimanjaro to ensure all citizens have access to energy, which is vital for improving social services and fostering development in these communities,” Ambassador Kingu said.

Kelvin Melchiad, REA’s Project Engineer for Kilimanjaro, confirmed that several electrification projects are underway, including the Hamlets Electrification Project (HEP 2A), currently in implementation.

The government has allocated TZS 32.7 billion to support these projects, ensuring that residents gain reliable electricity, which will spur economic and social development.

Elinisaah Kileo, a retired hamlet councilor from Lomate, thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for enabling REA to extend electricity to the area, noting the significant benefits for local development and livelihoods.
