The Maasai community from Msomera village, who relocated from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, actively participated in the 2025 Maasai Cultural Festival (Orkwaak le Maasae) held in Siha District, Kilimanjaro Region.

The festival, which brought together Maasai from across Tanzania, aims to preserve and celebrate the traditions, customs, and cultural heritage of the Maasai people.

It also provides a platform for communities to exchange knowledge, showcase their unique identity, and strengthen cultural ties.

Speaking after the inauguration, which drew more than 30,000 attendees, Ms. Juliana Thadei Saidimu of Msomera expressed her delight at seeing her community engage with Maasai from other regions and even international participants.

“Participating in this festival allows us to celebrate our heritage alongside others, share experiences, and learn from one another. It is a proud moment for our community,” she said.

Maasai cultural leader Mr. Komba Riko Lodoo praised government efforts to involve citizens in social and cultural events, noting that the festival demonstrates the community’s commitment to preserving their traditions despite relocating.

“Moving from Ngorongoro to Msomera has provided us with economic freedom, better access to social services, and the ability to continue our cultural practices. Events like this festival allow us to unite with fellow Maasai and ensure our customs remain alive,” he said.

The three-day festival highlights the Maasai community’s dedication to safeguarding and promoting Tanzania’s cultural heritage.

Through such initiatives, traditional values and customs continue to thrive, ensuring they remain a living legacy for future generations.
