Minister Lukuvi delivers President Samia’s directives following Nyandolwa mine accident

By Our Reporter, Shinyanga

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has personally directed government officials to support families affected by the Nyandolwa mine tragedy in Shinyanga.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Policy, Coordination, and Parliament, William Lukuvi, representing the President, urged leaders on the ground to take part in all burial arrangements and deliver her condolences to the bereaved.

He also emphasized the importance of coordinating the ongoing rescue operations.

Speaking at the accident site, Lukuvi said, “President Samia has asked me to convey her deepest condolences to the families. She has instructed local leaders to attend all funeral ceremonies and ensure her sympathy reaches those who lost loved ones.”

The government has taken practical steps to assist families. On August 16, Shinyanga District Commissioner Julius Mtatiro ordered the establishment of a temporary village executive office at the accident site.

The office registers visitors waiting for their relatives and ensures they receive government support.

Two days later, on August 18, Shinyanga Regional Commissioner Mboni Mhita asked families to select two or three representatives.

This helps officials provide services efficiently and meet the urgent needs of the affected households.

The tragedy occurred on August 11 at the Nyandolwa pits operated by the Wachapakazi Group. A total of 25 people were involved. So far, 11 have been rescued, three remain alive at the site, and eight have died.

Authorities continue intensive search efforts for the remaining 14 victims using advanced ground-penetrating equipment.

The President’s direct involvement and the government’s hands-on approach demonstrate a commitment to both rescue efforts and compassionate support for families.

Officials say lessons from this incident will guide improved safety measures in small-scale mining operations across the country.
