Malagarasi Hydropower Project hits major milestone with early River diversion

The 49.5-megawatt Malagarasi Hydropower Project has reached a critical stage after engineers successfully diverted the Malagarasi River ahead of schedule, clearing the way for construction of the main dam.

Speaking at the diversion ceremony on August 13, 2025, Project Manager Eng. Saidi Kimbanga said the achievement marks a turning point in the project’s implementation, which is now 10 percent complete.

The project, launched in April 2024, is scheduled for completion in October 2027, but he expressed optimism it could be finished earlier.

“We had initially planned to divert the river on August 27, but we have managed to do it more than ten days ahead of schedule.

This progress gives us confidence that the project will be completed on time, if not sooner,” Eng. Kimbanga said.

He stressed that diverting the river is essential for controlling water flow through a designated channel, a prerequisite for hydropower generation.

“This step is fundamental in ensuring that we can produce the intended electricity output once the dam is operational,” he explained.

Western Zone Director Eng. Andrew Swai attributed the milestone to strong government backing and the close oversight of the Ministry of Energy and the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) in managing the contractor, Dongfang Electric International Corporation of China.

“TANESCO will continue working side-by-side with the contractor to ensure timely completion,” he pledged.

Kigoma Regional Manager Eng. Julius Sabu said the project’s completion will guarantee a reliable electricity supply in the region, urging investors to capitalise on the anticipated stability.

“With dependable power, Kigoma will be well-positioned for growth and investment,” he said.

Costing TSh 300 billion, the Malagarasi Hydropower Project is one of the government’s flagship energy investments aimed at boosting Tanzania’s electricity generation capacity and supporting economic transformation, particularly in the western regions.
