Community groups participating in small-scale road maintenance in Korogwe District have commended the government for implementing the Rural Investment and Social Empowerment (RISE) project, which aims to strengthen rural road infrastructure and drive socio-economic development.

The initiative, implemented by the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), is being rolled out in 25 regions across mainland Tanzania. Its first phase has already begun in four regions, covering eight local councils.

During a capacity-building training organized by TARURA, Mr. Hassan Mshauri of the Mixed Group said the program equipped participants with practical skills to ensure that local roads remain passable year-round.

“This training was provided free of charge and has given us practical methods to support our livelihoods through the skills we have acquired. We also plan to pass on this knowledge to our peers, teaching them how to participate in small-scale road maintenance to improve community welfare,” he said.

Ms. Maria Simoni, Secretary of the Perseverance Group, added that the government’s support will motivate them to maintain roads in their areas.

“After this training, we will ensure that rural roads remain in good condition, free from potholes and blocked drainage. We thank TARURA for providing this knowledge at no cost,” she said.

The RISE project is part of the government’s broader efforts to empower communities by providing practical skills while enhancing infrastructure that directly supports local economic growth.
