The government will cover all funeral expenses for those who died in the Nyandolwa Gold Mine accident in Shinyanga Region, which occurred on August 11, 2025.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Policy, Parliament and Coordination, Mr. William Lukuvi, delivered President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s condolences to the families of the victims, describing the tragedy as a “deeply saddening incident.”

“The government extends heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families. We are committed to easing the burden during this painful period by funding burial costs and ensuring treatment for the injured,” said Mr. Lukuvi when speaking to relatives and rescue teams at the site.

He urged the rescue teams to intensify efforts to reach those still trapped underground. “Significant work has been done, but more effort is needed. The government will continue to provide full support to guarantee an effective and safe rescue mission,” he added.

The mine supervisor, Mr. Fikiri, said operations are expected to conclude within three to four days, citing the availability of modern equipment and expert personnel to speed up the process.

Before visiting the site, Mr. Lukuvi held talks with Shinyanga Regional Commissioner Ms. Mboni Mhita, where he received a briefing on the mining sector’s progress and the ongoing rescue efforts.

Speaking on behalf of the victims’ families, Mr. Furaha Enock expressed gratitude for the government’s swift response.

“We appreciate the respect and care shown to us during this tragedy. We cannot thank President Samia and her leadership enough for their support,” he said.

Mr. Lukuvi’s visit is part of the government’s broader efforts to coordinate emergency response, reinforce rescue operations, and ensure dignity for all victims of the accident.
