Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has instructed the Ministry of Agriculture to establish a structured mechanism that will enable agricultural institutions to access modern farming equipment, saying such a move is critical to boosting productivity in the sector.
Speaking on Sunday, August 3, 2025, during the National Cooperative Day celebrations held at Ushirika Village within the Nane Nane exhibition grounds in Nzughuni, Dodoma, Majaliwa said modern machinery would play a key role in transforming Tanzania’s agricultural landscape.
“These machines whether for planting, harvesting, or irrigation are very costly,” said the Prime Minister.
“But if the Ministry puts in place the right framework, even one that allows institutions to access the tools through loans, it will significantly improve productivity and drive transformation.”he added
He emphasized that cooperatives and other agriculture-related institutions must be empowered with tools that match current technological standards to meet the country's growing demand for food security, value addition, and agro-industrial growth.
The directive comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to modernize agriculture under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, which has prioritized the sector as a key driver of inclusive economic growth.
The 2025 National Cooperative Day celebrations formed part of the ongoing Nane Nane Farmers' Exhibition, a platform that brings together farmers, government agencies, cooperatives, private sector players, and development partners to showcase innovations and share ideas on best agricultural practices.
Majaliwa reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that cooperatives are not only well-equipped but also professionally managed, urging all stakeholders to embrace modernization and strategic partnerships to unlock the sector’s full potential.
