The Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Omari Kipanga, has urged Tanzanians to actively participate in environmental conservation by planting and properly nurturing trees.
Kipanga made the remarks during a visit to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism pavilion at the ongoing NaneNane Agricultural Exhibition in Dodoma.
He specifically commended the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) for its exemplary work in producing and conserving quality tree seedlings aimed at environmental protection and economic empowerment.
At the TFS Tree Seedling Production Centre within the pavilion, the Deputy Minister witnessed the variety of seedlings cultivated to support afforestation efforts and enhance community livelihoods.
“Today, I had the privilege to visit the Ministry’s pavilion, where I saw firsthand the impactful work of TFS from seedling production to forest and wildlife conservation. Their efforts contribute significantly to safeguarding our natural heritage,” said Kipanga.
In a personal demonstration of commitment, Kipanga purchased fruit tree seedlings to plant in his home compound in Dodoma, emphasizing the importance of individual responsibility in environmental stewardship.
“These seedlings will provide food, shade, and help restore natural ecosystems. It is vital that every Tanzanian plays their part in protecting our environment,” he noted.
On the challenges posed by climate change, the Deputy Minister pointed to rampant illegal logging and forest destruction as major contributors. He stressed that tree planting must go hand-in-hand with proper care to ensure survival and growth.
“Planting alone is insufficient. We must nurture the trees until maturity to effectively combat climate change and address the country’s rainfall shortages,” he explained.
Hon. Kipanga encouraged citizens and development partners to visit TFS pavilions at all regional NaneNane exhibitions to learn more about the agency’s conservation services.
TFS exhibition booths are accessible at NaneNane grounds nationwide, providing valuable information on forest resource management and conservation.
