Mwinyi hails ETDCO’s role in strengthening Tanzania’s energy infrastructure

Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, on Monday commended the Electrical Transmission and Distribution, Construction and Maintenance Company Limited  (ETDCO) for its growing contribution to Tanzania’s power infrastructure and energy access.

Dr Mwinyi made the remarks during his visit to the company’s pavilion at the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), where he was received by the Acting General Manager of ETDCO, CPA Sadock Mugendi.

During the tour, CPA Mugendi walked the Head of State through a showcase of the company’s completed and ongoing electricity infrastructure projects, highlighting its efforts to expand access to reliable electricity across the country.

The President also presented a goodwill token to ETDCO staff, recognising their commitment and active participation in the national trade event.

Speaking to the media shortly after the visit, CPA Mugendi said the company’s participation at this year’s exhibition aims to raise awareness of ETDCO’s role in implementing strategic transmission and distribution projects that are aligned with the national development agenda.

“Our goal is to demonstrate the extent to which ETDCO is supporting government efforts to ensure stable and accessible electricity in both urban and rural areas,” he said.

Among ETDCO’s flagship achievements is the completion of the 132kV transmission line from Tabora to Katavi, a project that has significantly enhanced electricity supply to western regions of the country.

Another key milestone includes the construction of a 115-kilometre, 132kV transmission line from Tabora to Urambo, which has helped stabilise power distribution within the Tabora Region.

“These projects are not just about increasing capacity but also about building resilience in the national grid, enabling communities and businesses to thrive,” Mugendi noted.

ETDCO, a subsidiary of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), is using the DITF platform to engage stakeholders and the general public on the importance of investment in energy infrastructure.

Mugendi invited visitors to explore the company’s pavilion within the TANESCO booth to learn more about how ETDCO is delivering on its mandate.

He further revealed that the company has played an instrumental role in rural electrification under the Rural Energy Agency (REA), particularly in Mwanza, Arusha, Katavi, Mbeya, Geita, and Kigoma.

The initiatives are part of wider efforts by the Sixth-Phase Government to expand the national grid and improve energy access in underserved areas.

“Reliable electricity is a critical enabler of socio-economic transformation, and we are proud to be contributing to the government’s electrification goals,” Mugendi said.

Looking ahead, ETDCO is preparing to roll out the second phase of the Urambo–Nguruka–Kigoma transmission line. The 260-kilometre, 132kV project is expected to further strengthen power distribution in western Tanzania, complementing earlier investments and bridging supply gaps in the region.

“These developments are a clear reflection of the government’s resolve to enhance electricity access and improve service delivery. ETDCO remains committed to delivering high-impact projects that support inclusive economic growth,” Mugendi said.

The 49th edition of the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, taking place at the Mwalimu Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds, continues to draw hundreds of exhibitors from both the public and private sectors.

The annual event provides a platform for companies like ETDCO to showcase innovations, share expertise, and forge new partnerships aimed at fast-tracking the country’s development.
