Tanzania’s national women’s football team, Twiga Stars, are gearing up for a decisive clash against Ghana in their third and final Group C match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled for July 14 in Morocco.
With both teams sitting on just one point after two matches, the upcoming fixture is seen as a do-or-die battle for a place in the knockout stage.
Twiga Stars head coach Bakari Shime said his players are fully focused and determined to secure a much-needed victory. “Our energy, focus, and mindset are all geared toward the Ghana match. We are preparing thoroughly because we know how important this game is we want all three points,” said Shime.
Tanzania began their WAFCON campaign with a 2-1 loss to Mali, followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw against defending champions South Africa. They currently sit at the bottom of Group C on goal difference, tied on one point with Ghana.
“For us, this match is like a final,” Shime added. “It won’t be easy, but we are going to strategize carefully and fight for every opportunity. Both teams are in the same position, so it’s all about who wants it more.”
Reflecting on the South Africa game, Shime expressed frustration over missed chances. “We had at least two clear opportunities to score. We took the lead early, but we failed to protect it, allowing them to equalize. That’s something we must correct going forward.”
Team captain Opah Clement acknowledged the pressure but remained optimistic. “It’s going to be a tough match, but we are ready to fight. We’ll listen to the coach’s instructions and give our best to achieve a positive result,” she said.
Midfielder Diana Lucas, who was named Player of the Match against South Africa, said the recognition has motivated her to work even harder.
“I’m honored and happy. It gives me the strength to keep going and fight for the team. The support I’ve received is overwhelming,” Lucas noted.
Meanwhile, Masau Bwire, Public Relations Officer for JKT Tanzania/JKT Queens, called on Tanzanians to rally behind the national team.
“We’ve seen promising signs. Now let’s all pray and support our team. We need a big win against Ghana with enough goals. We believe in Twiga Stars. It’s possible,” said Bwire.
As the match approaches, hopes are high that Twiga Stars will rise to the occasion and deliver a performance that keeps their WAFCON dreams alive.
