TPDC wins top award for promoting clean energy at Sabasaba

The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has earned national recognition at the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), commonly known as Sabasaba, for its exemplary role in advancing clean energy solutions and public education on sustainable energy use.

TPDC was honoured with an award for its continued contribution to environmental conservation and the promotion of natural gas as a reliable, affordable, and eco-friendly alternative to conventional fuels.

Speaking shortly after receiving the award, TPDC’s Head of Communication, Maria Mselemu, said the accolade reflects the organisation’s commitment to delivering impactful and results-driven services across the energy sector.

“This marks our fifth award at Sabasaba. For us, it’s a continuation of the consistent performance we’ve maintained in various thematic areas, including environmental excellence,” Mselemu noted.

She explained that TPDC’s clean energy initiatives have significantly reduced carbon emissions, helping the country move toward a low-carbon economy.

“Through the use of clean cooking energy and natural gas for transport and industrial processes, we’ve managed to eliminate over 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere,” she said. “Our technical precision and focus on safety and accessibility have positioned us as a frontrunner in Tanzania’s energy transformation.”

Currently, TPDC has connected more than 1,500 households in Dar es Salaam and Mtwara to piped natural gas for cooking, reducing dependence on charcoal and firewood, which contribute to deforestation and indoor air pollution.

In the transport sector, over 5,000 vehicles and 5,000 three-wheelers (bajaji) across the country have been converted to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), providing a cleaner and more cost-effective alternative to petrol and diesel.

Moreover, TPDC supplies gas to over 57 industries, supporting lower operational costs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Natural gas is also used to generate electricity at Kinyerezi I and Kinyerezi II power plants, both of which contribute to a more sustainable and reliable national energy mix.

“Sabasaba has been an excellent platform for us to educate the public about the benefits of natural gas, not just as a cleaner option but as a key driver of industrial development and environmental protection,” Mselemu added.

TPDC’s latest recognition underscores its central role in supporting Tanzania’s energy transition agenda, while reinforcing the importance of natural gas in achieving national development goals and climate resilience.

As the country continues to expand its clean energy footprint, TPDC remains a strategic partner in delivering modern, safe, and affordable energy to Tanzanians.
