TANESCO promotes clean cooking with electric cooker giveaway at Sabasaba

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has stepped up efforts to promote clean cooking energy by distributing electric pressure cookers to Tanzanians who visited its pavilion at the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba.

TANESCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said the initiative aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s national directive urging Tanzanians to shift from traditional and unclean energy sources to modern, sustainable alternatives.

“We are implementing President Samia’s vision by encouraging the use of electricity for cooking. These electric pressure cookers have been tested and shown to prepare meals using less than one unit of electricity,” Mr. Twange told journalists at the TANESCO booth.

As part of its public engagement, TANESCO conducted awareness sessions at the pavilion, where citizens learned about the benefits of clean cooking energy. Those who correctly answered quiz questions during the sessions were rewarded with electric cookers.

Mr. Twange noted that the initiative aims not only to promote electricity as a clean energy source but also to empower households to adopt healthier, more environmentally friendly cooking practices.

“We are grateful for the strong turnout at our pavilion. The recipients of these cookers will serve as ambassadors of clean energy in their communities,” he added.

Witnessing the distribution, Dar es Salaam resident Ms. Mariam Mwinjuma applauded TANESCO’s outreach efforts. “It is encouraging to see public institutions taking practical steps to promote clean cooking technologies. These cookers will reduce health risks and lower fuel costs for many families,” she said.

TANESCO’s campaign comes at a critical time, as Tanzania continues to grapple with widespread use of firewood and charcoal, which contribute to deforestation and indoor air pollution. By promoting electricity as a clean cooking solution, TANESCO aims to accelerate the country’s transition to modern energy use.

The Sabasaba trade fair, which draws thousands of participants and exhibitors each year, provides a strategic platform for public and private sector actors to showcase innovations, share knowledge, and drive national development agendas.
