The Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) has expressed satisfaction with the growing competitiveness of the ongoing CRDB Taifa Cup, noting that this year’s edition has surpassed previous tournaments in intensity and regional participation.
Now at the semi-final stage, the tournament has already seen Dodoma’s men’s and women’s teams book their places in the last four.
The championship has also witnessed surprising upsets, with defending champions Mara (women) and Kigoma (men) exiting after defeats in the quarterfinals.
Speaking to The Respondent Online, TBF’s Commissioner for Technical Affairs and Tournament Operations, Daniel Patrick Mbwana, described this year’s tournament as a turning point for regional basketball development in Tanzania.
“This year, the level of competition has been remarkable,” said Mbwana. “Unlike last year, we now have 13 regional teams competing in the women’s category and 20 in the men’s, compared to just seven and 13 regions, respectively, in 2024. That shows real progress.”
Mbwana noted that teams have entered the tournament with greater preparation and determination. “Every team came to compete, not just to participate. The early elimination of the reigning champions is proof that the gap between teams is narrowing,” he said.
He added that the enthusiasm displayed by players and the overall energy of the tournament reflect a positive trend in the sport’s development across the country.
“This year’s CRDB Taifa Cup is unique not just in numbers, but in the seriousness and readiness of all participating regions. We’re proud of what this tournament has become,” Mbwana concluded.
The semi-finals are set to continue today, with high expectations for thrilling performances as teams battle for a place in the national final.
