Tanzania’s state-owned power utility, TANESCO, has embarked on a comprehensive upgrade of its internal Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems as part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and enhance operational efficiency.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, TANESCO confirmed that the upgrade marks a critical transition phase, particularly impacting the generation of government payment control numbers for customers seeking new electricity connections.
Although some customers in select regions have already received cost estimates for connection services, delays in payment processing have been reported.
“This is a temporary disruption as we migrate from the legacy system to a more robust and integrated digital platform,” the statement read. “Our ICT experts are working around the clock to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.”
The utility acknowledged the inconvenience caused to some customers and called for patience and understanding during the transitional period.
The upgrade, TANESCO said, aims to streamline internal operations, reduce service turnaround time, and ultimately improve customer satisfaction.
The company emphasized that the long-term benefits of the system overhaul will include improved reliability and transparency in service delivery, particularly in billing, payment tracking, and response time to new connection requests.
TANESCO further assured its customers that regular updates would be provided regarding the progress of the ICT enhancements.
Customers experiencing difficulties, especially those awaiting control numbers for payment, are encouraged to contact the utility’s customer care centre via the toll-free number 180.
The digital transformation forms part of TANESCO’s wider strategic plan to modernize its infrastructure and adapt to the growing demand for efficient and accessible energy services in Tanzania.
With rising electricity connectivity needs across the country, especially in rural and underserved areas, the system improvements are expected to play a crucial role in meeting national electrification targets and supporting Tanzania’s broader economic development agenda.
