Tanzania’s national youth athletics and table tennis teams were officially flagged off today, July 23, 2025, ahead of the first-ever African School Games for athletes under the age of 17. The competition will be held from July 26 to August 7 in Algeria.
A six-member delegation is expected to depart tonight, carrying the country’s hopes as they represent Tanzania on a continental stage designed to showcase emerging talent from across Africa.
Speaking during the flag handover ceremony in Dar es Salaam, the President of the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC), Mr. Gulam Rashid, urged the athletes to focus on hard work and determination, noting that success in sports is earned through effort.
“There is no guarantee of victory without commitment,” said Mr. Rashid. “I am encouraged by the team’s readiness and confidence. You go with the potential to win medals and possibly trophies, but above all, represent Tanzania with pride and integrity.”
He added that proper preparation is the foundation of any great performance and called on the athletes to capitalize on the training and support they have received.
The National Sports Council (BMT) Sports Officer, Mr. Charles Maguzu, echoed the sentiment, encouraging the athletes to take full advantage of the opportunity and prove their capabilities.
“You have the potential to return home with medals,” said Mr. Maguzu. “This is not a matter of luck you have earned this opportunity. Represent us well and show the continent what Tanzanian youth can achieve.”
He emphasized that Tanzania is no longer in the phase of experimenting with talent but is now aiming for competitive excellence.
TOC Vice President Mr. Henry Tandau also reminded the young athletes of the magnitude of the moment, pointing out that millions of young people in Tanzania dream of such a platform.
“This opportunity has come to a select few, and you must make it count,” said Mr. Tandau. “These games are significant. If you perform well, your names will be written into the sporting history of Tanzania.”
Tanzania will participate in two disciplines athletics and table tennis in this year’s tournament.
Head coach of the athletics team, Mr. Robert Kalyahe, expressed confidence in his athletes, saying they are well-prepared and motivated to compete at the highest level.
“Our athletes are ready. They believe in themselves, and we believe in them too,” said Coach Kalyahe. “We are going to Algeria with the ambition to succeed.”
Team captain Baraka Fidelis Sanjigwa reaffirmed the team’s commitment to excellence, pledging to give their best performance and make the nation proud.
“We’re heading into these games to compete, to fight, and to win,” he said. “All we ask from Tanzanians is their support and prayers. We promise not to disappoint.”
The African U-17 School Games aim to promote sportsmanship, talent development, and unity among African nations by offering young athletes an international platform to shine.
Tanzania’s participation signals its growing investment in youth sports and commitment to nurturing future champions.
