Tanzania to launch “Made in Tanzania” brand mark at 49th Sabasaba exhibition

By Alfred Zacharia

Tanzania is set to launch a new National Brand Mark known as Made in Tanzania during this year’s 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), also known as Sabasaba.

The launch will be officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko.

This was revealed on Thursday by the Minister for Industry and Trade, Dr. Suleiman Jaffo, during his visit to the ongoing trade fair at the Mwalimu Nyerere Fair Grounds.

In another announcement, Dr. Jaffo said the Sabasaba Trade Fair will be officially opened on July 7, 2025 by the President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi. The fair will close on July 13, 2025, with the closing ceremony being led by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.

Dr. Jaffo said the new brand mark is an important step in giving Tanzanian products a clear identity in both domestic and international markets. Currently, Tanzania exports many goods, but most do not carry an official national mark.

“Tanzania is not only increasing production, but we are now exporting to more countries,” he said. For example, Tanzanian maize and rice are now being exported to Senegal, Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan. Industrial goods like gypsum and glass are being sold to Kenya and Burundi.

The minister also highlighted growth in the steel industry.

Tanzania has 24 steel factories that produce iron rods, which are used in large infrastructure projects like the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant. This project uses only locally made steel.

Sugar production is also improving. At Kilombero Sugar, output has doubled from 130,000 tonnes to over 270,000 tonnes per year. Dr. Jaffo said that by 2027, Tanzania is expected to meet local demand and begin exporting sugar.

The new brand mark will help show where a product is made and promote Tanzania as a trusted source of goods. It is also expected to raise awareness about the quality and value of Tanzanian products globally.

The Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) has completed the first phase of the brand development. A total of 88 logo designs were submitted by individuals from across the country. After review, six designs were selected and their creators were trained to improve them. From those, three designs were chosen for public voting.

TanTrade has invited the public to vote online for the logo that best represents Tanzanian products and the winning design will be officially launched, registered and used as the country’s national brand mark.

According to TanTrade, the new mark will help Tanzanian products gain more visibility, trust, and competitiveness in international markets. It will also serve as a symbol of pride for local manufacturers and exporters.

Meanwhile, TanTrade is encouraging all Tanzanians to take part in the logo voting process. The final winner will be revealed during the official launching ceremony of the brand mark.
