Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to African-led efforts for peace and stability as it joined other nations in a high-level African Union (AU) summit aimed at addressing the political and security crisis in Libya.

Minister for Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa, represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the virtual meeting of Heads of State and Government under the AU Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC), held on July 24, 2025.

The meeting was chaired by Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in his capacity as Chairperson of the AU-PSC.

Tanzania is among the 15 African Union member states that currently form the Council, which is responsible for promoting peace, security and stability across the continent.

Speaking on behalf of President Samia, Minister Bashungwa commended the leadership of President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, who chairs the AU High-Level Committee on Libya.

He applauded President Nguesso’s efforts, particularly his oversight of The National Reconciliation Charter  a key framework guiding Libya toward peace.

"The Charter is instrumental in charting a peaceful political transition through national elections, strengthening of democratic institutions, and the restoration of the Libyan national army,” said Bashungwa.

He further emphasized Tanzania’s unwavering belief in diplomacy and consensus-driven solutions, noting that stability in Libya is crucial not only for North Africa but for the continent at large.

“Tanzania stands in solidarity with the people of Libya as they work toward peace, unity, and institutional recovery. We are committed to supporting initiatives that foster long-term stability and development,” he said.

The summit brought together African leaders to assess the latest developments in Libya and deliberate on collective strategies to end years of political turmoil, civil conflict, and institutional breakdown.

The meeting also reinforced the AU’s role in supporting national reconciliation, inclusive dialogue, and regional cooperation to achieve lasting peace.
