Tanzania’s Lina Professional Golf (PG) Tour kicked off its fourth season on Wednesday at Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam, with 150 players competing in the four-day tournament held in memory of former national team golfer Lina Nkya.
The event features 68 professional and junior players, alongside 82 amateur participants, and will run through July 20.
It is organised by the family of Said Nkya to honour Lina Nkya, who was part of the Tanzanian women’s team that won the East and Central Africa Golf Championship in 2011.
“The Lina Tour has become an annual platform for players from across the country,” tournament coordinator Ayne Magombe told reporters. “With more support, we could increase the number of events and further develop the sport.”
Tanzania currently hosts five Lina Tour events annually.
Racheal Mushi, a player from Kilimanjaro Golf Club, said she was optimistic about her chances. “This tournament helps build talent by bringing players together. I encourage more young people to join,” she said.
Professional players from Gymkhana and Lugalo Golf Clubs said they were prepared for the competition and hopeful for strong performances.
Golf remains a niche sport in Tanzania, but initiatives like the Lina PG Tour aim to boost participation and visibility.
