Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Vice President’s Office (Environment), Prof Peter Msofe, has expressed satisfaction with the commitment shown by staff at the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) in enforcing environmental laws and protecting public health.

Prof. Msofe made the remarks during his first official visit to NEMC headquarters in Dar es Salaam since his appointment.

He said the Council has made progress despite facing operational and legal challenges.

“NEMC is doing visible work. The public sees your efforts. You should continue serving the country while also protecting yourselves from health risks during field operations,” he said.

He called on the staff to focus on five priority areas to strengthen their work. These include balancing personal and environmental risks, improving knowledge-sharing, promoting teamwork, and embracing innovation to keep pace with global environmental trends.

Prof. Msofe also reminded staff of the importance of maintaining professional discipline and staying motivated.

Meanwhile, NEMC Director General Dr. Immaculate Sware Semesi said the Council still faces challenges in enforcing environmental laws due to the lack of full legal authority.

She noted that NEMC relies on support from security and enforcement agencies to carry out certain responsibilities.

“The process to transform NEMC into a full-fledged authority with enforcement powers is ongoing,” she said.

The visit comes at a time when environmental protection is increasingly linked to national development and public well-being.
