The Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, arrived today in Namtumbo District, Ruvuma Region, to oversee final preparations for President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s upcoming visit to one of Tanzania’s most strategic energy investments the Mantra Tanzania uranium project.
President Samia is expected to officiate the inauguration of a Uranium Processing Plant on July 30, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to harness its natural resources for economic transformation.
She will also launch the construction of a full-scale uranium mine and a state-of-the-art processing facility, with the entire project valued at over TZS 3.06 trillion.
The project is implemented by Mantra Tanzania Ltd, a key player in the country’s mining sector, and is set to position Tanzania as a serious contender in the global uranium market. Once operational, the plant and mine are expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs and contribute to national revenue through exports and taxes.
Speaking during his inspection, Minister Mavunde emphasized the importance of ensuring that all technical, environmental, and logistical elements are in place to guarantee a successful launch.
“This is a game-changing project for Namtumbo and for Tanzania at large,” said the Minister. “It reflects the vision of President Samia to turn natural resources into inclusive and sustainable development opportunities.”
The uranium project comes at a time when global demand for clean energy sources is rising, and uranium a critical input for nuclear energy is gaining renewed attention.
Tanzania’s entry into uranium processing is expected to diversify its mineral exports and add value to its extractive sector.
President Samia’s launch of the plant and groundbreaking of the mine will not only mark a historic step for the Southern Highlands but also reaffirm the government's commitment to leveraging strategic minerals for long-term socio-economic growth.
