Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has urged the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to strengthen its internal systems, expand the tax base, and adopt innovative solutions to support the government’s domestic revenue targets.
Speaking at the official opening of TRA’s annual leadership retreat held at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC), the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of aligning revenue collection strategies with the country’s broader development goals.
“This meeting provides a platform not only to assess performance but to plan how TRA can contribute more effectively to national priorities. The government expects results that reflect improved systems, transparency, and a wider tax net,” said Mr Majaliwa.
The strategic meeting brings together senior TRA officials from all regions to review the authority’s performance for the 2024/25 financial year, identify gaps, and adopt new strategies for the 2025/26 fiscal period.
It serves as a key platform for enhancing leadership accountability, improving operational efficiency, and promoting a taxpayer-centered approach.
TRA Commissioner General Alphayo Kidata is expected to present a comprehensive performance report, covering revenue collections, digital tax system upgrades, compliance trends, and taxpayer engagement initiatives.
The Prime Minister challenged the authority to move beyond routine tax collection and become a driver of economic growth by facilitating a fair and enabling environment for businesses.
He emphasized the importance of building public trust and simplifying processes for both individuals and enterprises.
“As the government focuses on financing key development initiatives through domestic resources, TRA must play its part in ensuring no potential revenue is left untapped. It is not just about reaching targets it is about improving how we get there,” he added.
The retreat also aims to reinforce the government’s ongoing reform agenda in public finance management, which includes curbing revenue leakages, strengthening accountability, and leveraging technology to boost transparency.
The meeting is expected to conclude with actionable resolutions that will guide TRA’s operations in the new financial year, supporting the broader economic vision under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.
