Accra, Ghana – The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has joined regional efforts to enhance environmental oversight by participating in the launch of a state-of-the-art digital system for monitoring industrial emissions in real time.

The system, known as the Online Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (OCEMS), was unveiled on July 29, 2025, in Accra, Ghana. It is designed to improve transparency and accessibility of pollution data, helping regulators and stakeholders track environmental compliance more efficiently.

Representing Tanzania at the event were NEMC Director General Dr Immaculate Awere Semesi and the Council’s Chief Legal Officer, Ms Jackline Nyantori.

Dr. Semesi said the deployment of the OCEMS marks a milestone in the region’s quest to modernise environmental monitoring and promote cleaner industrial practices.

“This system enables regulators to access emissions data in real time, which is key to enforcing environmental standards and protecting public health,” she said.

She added that such innovations are crucial in facilitating regional knowledge exchange and building capacity among environmental agencies across Africa.

The launch brought together environmental authorities, industry representatives and development partners from across the continent, as countries seek to harmonise approaches to tackling industrial pollution and climate change.

NEMC’s participation underscores Tanzania’s commitment to leveraging digital tools for better environmental governance and regional cooperation.
