Morogoro. The Morogoro Municipal Council has embarked on the construction of a modern bus terminal next to the Jakaya Kikwete Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station, in a move expected to revolutionize urban transport and boost local commerce.

The project, worth Sh13.4 billion, is being implemented under the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) programme, which aims to enhance infrastructure and improve service delivery in urban centres.

Speaking during a groundbreaking ceremony, Municipal Director Emmanuel Mkongo said the terminal is scheduled for completion by July 21, 2026.

The facility will offer a wide range of amenities and serve as a key link for passengers connecting to the SGR and other destinations within and outside the Morogoro Region.

“This terminal will significantly improve transport efficiency and ease travel for commuters. It is not only a transport hub, but also a centre for business and service delivery,” said Mkongo.

The facility will house a 30-room hotel, a restaurant and entertainment area, conference halls, a variety of retail spaces, office rentals, modern food vending zones, a police post, waiting areas, public toilets, and secure parking for buses, motorcycles (bodaboda), and tricycles (bajaji).

Two asphalt-paved access roads—each stretching one kilometre—will be constructed, along with a bridge that directly connects the terminal to the SGR station, further streamlining travel.

Regional Commissioner Adam Malima, who officiated the event, urged local entrepreneurs to seize investment opportunities around the terminal to stimulate economic activity.

“This is a major opportunity for Morogoro to emerge as a modern commercial centre. We also call on utilities to ensure water, electricity and roads are in place by the time the terminal is operational,” said Malima.

He extended his gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her commitment to improving public services and infrastructure, noting the terminal is a product of her administration’s strategic focus on development.

Engineer Ding Fubing, Director of TIL Constructions Co. Ltd—the firm executing the project—assured that the construction will be completed within 12 months, emphasizing the team’s commitment to timely and high-quality delivery.

The Morogoro terminal is among 12 projects under the TACTIC programme recently signed by the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), covering 11 cities across the country.

Overall, the TACTIC initiative is part of a nationwide infrastructure transformation in 45 urban centres, including the development of paved roads, public transport terminals, stormwater drainage systems, markets, recreational parks, and ferry crossings.
