President Samia Suluhu Hassan has approved a substantial TSh 98.89 billion investment to upgrade and expand secondary education infrastructure in Mbeya and Mtwara regions, reaffirming her government’s commitment to inclusive and quality education across Tanzania.
The funding, channeled through the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Program (SEQUIP), targets the renovation of existing schools, construction of new ones, and provision of essential facilities including classrooms, dormitories, teachers’ houses, and sanitation units.
In Mbeya Region, more than TSh 24.53 billion has been disbursed between 2022 and 2024. These funds have supported the construction of 22 new ward-level secondary schools, a boarding secondary school for girls, and the rehabilitation of Mwakaleli Secondary School.
The initiative also includes the completion of science laboratories, 221 toilet units, eight teachers’ houses, and the development of two vocational schools.
Further investments in Mbeya have enabled the expansion of six secondary schools to accommodate A-Level classes (Form Five), the construction of dormitories, and the completion of infrastructure at the special regional girls’ school in Kyela District.
In Mtwara, the government has injected over TSh 74.36 billion under SEQUIP to construct 38 new secondary schools, 21 teachers’ houses, 29 dormitories, and 137 toilet units.
The region has also seen the construction of 46 classrooms (20 completed and 26 ongoing), along with 27 classroom structures (bomas) under development.
This investment reflects the Sixth Phase Government’s broader education vision championed by President Samia of expanding access to quality secondary education, particularly for girls and underserved communities.
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce classroom congestion, improve the learning environment, and strengthen the overall delivery of secondary education services in the two regions.
By empowering local communities with better educational facilities, the government is laying the groundwork for long-term socio-economic transformation driven by well-educated and skilled future generations.
