Vijana Queens are determined to defend their title in the ongoing Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball League (DBL), according to head coach Kabiola Shomari.
Speaking in an interview with The Respondent Online, Shomari said the team has embarked on serious preparations despite changes in the squad due to player transfers.
“We’re rebuilding after some of our key players moved to other teams,” said Shomari. “The process hasn’t been easy, but we’ve recruited new talent and we’re focused on getting them fully integrated into the team.”
Shomari emphasized that the ultimate goal is to return to the finals and retain the championship. “Our ambition is clear we want to defend our title. That means staying consistent, focused, and working together as a team,” he said.
He acknowledged the tough competition in this year’s league, naming Jeshi Stars, Tausi Royals, and JKT Stars among their biggest challengers. “The level of competition has gone up,” he noted. “But if we can secure at least three key wins, we stand a good chance of reaching the quarterfinals and beyond.”
The coach also highlighted the challenge of building chemistry within a newly formed squad. “Team chemistry takes time,” he said. “But the players are responding well, and we’re seeing improvements in every game.”
Vijana Queens recently made a strong statement with a resounding 96–26 win over Mgulani Stars. In other results, Tausi Royals thrashed Kurasini Divas 151–04, while Polisi Stars narrowly lost 57–56 to Twalipo. DB Lioness were outclassed 64–49 by JKT Stars.
In the men’s division, KIUT recorded a 64–53 win over Outsiders, Pazi overcame Srelio 81–73, and Chui defeated Mgulani JKT 75–57.
With the league heating up, Shomari remains optimistic: “We’re not just playing to participate—we’re playing to win. Every game is a step closer to our goal.”
