The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has issued a directive requiring all electric vehicles operating without official registration plates to be duly registered by June 30, 2025.
The move targets a growing number of electric-powered motorcycles, tricycles (maguta), and other similar vehicles operating without legal identification on public roads.
In a public notice, TRA said it had observed a concerning trend in the use of unregistered electric vehicles across the country, prompting the authority to launch a special registration exercise effective from May 16.
“The Road Traffic Act, 1973, Section 8(1), makes it mandatory for every motor vehicle user to register and display a valid number plate before operating on public roads,” the authority said.
“All users of unregistered electric vehicles must comply within the specified period or face legal action.”he added
The initiative reflects TRA’s broader efforts to formalize the growing electric mobility sector while enhancing road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic and tax regulations.
In response to increased demand for electric mobility, TRA has upgraded its motor vehicle registration system to accommodate all categories of vehicles, including those powered by electricity.
Registration can be completed online via www.tra.go.tz or at any of the authority’s offices nationwide.
“Through this improved system, we aim to simplify the registration process and support users in meeting their legal obligations efficiently,” TRA noted.
The authority emphasized that operating unregistered vehicles undermines public safety and hampers traceability, particularly in the event of accidents or criminal activity.
Bringing these vehicles into the formal system is also expected to support broader government initiatives on sustainable transportation and emissions reduction.
Members of the public are urged to respond promptly to the directive. For further information or clarification, they are encouraged to reach out to TRA through its official website or nearby regional offices.
The campaign marks a critical step in aligning Tanzania’s regulatory framework with emerging transport technologies while reinforcing accountability on the nation’s roads.
