TCRA releases official guidelines for internet and mobile frequency auction

By The Respondent Reporter

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has officially published a document that explains how mobile and internet communication frequencies in the 3600–3800 MHz band will be distributed.

This is part of the government's efforts to ensure fair and transparent access to radio frequencies, which are important for providing better mobile and internet services across the country.

The announcement follows a public consultation that took place earlier this year. On February 3, 2025, TCRA invited stakeholders and the public to give their opinions on a draft document regarding the frequency allocation.

The comments and suggestions received were reviewed and used to finalize the official guidelines. These guidelines were published on June 2, 2025.

The document provides clear instructions on how interested companies or organizations can apply to get part of the 3600–3800 MHz frequency band.

This band is essential for improving mobile network coverage and increasing internet speeds, especially with the growth of 4G and 5G technologies.

According to TCRA, the frequency allocation will be done through a competitive bidding process. This means that companies will need to submit their applications and compete by offering prices for the frequencies they want to use.

TCRA will evaluate the bids based on certain conditions, including participation requirements and the reserve price—the minimum amount a bidder must pay.

The document also includes rules to prevent any one company from getting too much frequency (known as the "spectrum cap") to ensure fair access for all players in the market.

TCRA encourages all interested stakeholders, especially mobile service providers and internet companies, to visit their official website (www.tcra.go.tz) to read the full document.

The authority has stressed the importance of following the provided timeline and procedures during the bidding and application process.

This move is expected to increase competition, improve communication services, and attract more investment into the country’s digital infrastructure.

Dr. Jabiri K. Bakari, the Director General of TCRA, signed the public notice and urged all stakeholders to take part in this important step toward strengthening Tanzania’s digital future.
