Tanzania pushes power projects forward to improve electricity access nationwide

By Agnes Njaala, Dar es Salaam

Tanzania’s Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, has called for accelerated work and strict adherence to quality standards as the country pushes ahead with major power infrastructure upgrades in Dar es Salaam.

During an inspection tour on 12 June, Commissioner Luoga reviewed progress on the government’s Grid Stability Project, which aims to modernize and strengthen the country’s electricity transmission and distribution network.

The initiative is central to Tanzania’s broader efforts to ensure a more stable and reliable electricity supply for its growing population.

"I am satisfied with the progress despite environmental challenges," Engineer Luoga said. "However, contractors must speed up their work, ensure timely delivery of equipment, and maintain the highest standards to deliver the full benefits of these projects to the people."

The projects, fully funded by the government and implemented by the state-owned Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), reflect President Samia Suluhu Hassan's continued focus on improving critical infrastructure to support economic growth.

Commissioner Luoga also urged TANESCO to increase oversight of contractors to prevent delays and cost overruns, which have previously hampered infrastructure development in the country.

TANESCO’s Generation Projects Manager, Engineer Abdallah Chikoyo, who represented the company’s Managing Director during the tour, assured the Commissioner that the utility company would intensify supervision and stick to project timelines.

“We are fully committed to ensuring these projects are delivered efficiently and on schedule, working closely with development partners to strengthen electricity services across the country,” Engineer Chikoyo said.

The inspection included visits to several key substations at Ubungo I, Mabibo, Kinyerezi, and Gongo la Mboto, where the installation of high-capacity transformers is underway. Once completed, the upgrades are expected to significantly enhance power reliability in Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial hub, and beyond.

Tanzania, like many African nations, is investing heavily in expanding and modernizing its electricity infrastructure to meet rising demand, support industrialization, and reduce reliance on unreliable power sources.
