Speaking at the launch, Ms. Irene Gowele, Acting Director of Communication and Customer Services at TANESCO, announced that the campaign, starting on June 19, 2025, is titled “Pay Your Debt, Protect Infrastructure”. It seeks to encourage voluntary settlement of arrears by customers.
“This campaign aims to remind and motivate large and medium postpaid customers nationwide to come forward and clear their outstanding bills voluntarily. We are also offering interest waivers to those who promptly engage in repayment negotiations,” Ms. Gowele explained.
She emphasized that TANESCO has opened its doors to customers for discussions and agreement on flexible repayment plans, highlighting the importance of cooperation and readiness.
For prepaid (LUKU) customers, Ms. Gowele noted that the company has introduced a special initiative to remind customers with outstanding debts on replaced-old meters.
This effort will be accompanied by comprehensive inspections of LUKU meters and related infrastructure, particularly in areas where infrastructural properties have been destroyed or stolen.
“These inspections aim to enhance service delivery and strengthen the security and reliability of our infrastructure,” she added.
According to TANESCO’s records, the company is owed over TZS 252 billion in arrears accumulated over the past decade up to June 2024, with the private sector alone accounting for TZS 138 billion.
Ms. Gowele also revealed ongoing challenges related to the theft of transformers, which TANESCO is addressing through dedicated and intensified operations.
“As an organization, we are committed to reminding customers that settling debts is a shared responsibility vital for protecting and improving electricity services. We urge all customers to cooperate willingly,” she concluded.
Currently, TANESCO serves more than 5.6 million customers, including government entities, private companies, and individual consumers across Tanzania.
