Dar es Salaam. A record 295 young swimmers from across mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar are participating in the Tanzania National Junior Swimming Championship, a two-day event for boys and girls under the age of 12.
The championship, which kicked off today — Saturday, June 14, 2025 — is being held in Dar es Salaam and will conclude tomorrow with the crowning of national champions in various age categories.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairman of the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA), David Mwasyoge, described the turnout as historic and a clear indication of the sport's growing popularity among young athletes.
“This is the highest number of participants we’ve ever recorded in a junior swimming competition,” said Mwasyoge.
“It reflects the rapid development of swimming in Tanzania and the growing interest among young people.”
Mwasyoge explained that the championship serves as a platform to identify and nurture promising talent, with the aim of building a strong foundation for future national swimming teams.
He noted that the event also marks the conclusion of the 2024/25 swimming season, with preparations already underway for the start of the new season in July.
“These competitions are crucial for skill development. They give young swimmers a chance to test their abilities, gain confidence, and showcase what they’ve learned in training,” he added.
“When children compete among themselves, it motivates them, builds discipline, and gives them valuable experience.”
Mwasyoge emphasized the broader impact of the championship, noting its contribution to the mental, emotional, and physical development of young swimmers. He also praised the efforts of coaches and parents in supporting the growth of the sport nationwide.
The championship is expected to conclude on Sunday, with top performers receiving medals and recognition from TSA officials.
