One person has died and 11 others sustained injuries following a road accident that occurred on Tuesday morning in the Skansinka area of Kawe, along Bagamoyo Road in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam Region.
According to a statement issued by the Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (CP) Muliro Jumanne Muliro, the accident occurred at around 8:40 a.m. and involved a Toyota Hilux with registration number T 152 DYN.
The vehicle was being driven by Mr Philipo Tobias, also known as Urio, a 33-year-old resident of Kimara.
“The vehicle was travelling from Mbuyuni towards Tegeta when it veered off the road and overturned. The accident led to the death of one individual, identified as Mr Rogasi Martine, 18, a scout. Eleven other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Mwananyamala Referral Hospital for treatment,” CP Muliro said in the statement.
The deceased’s body has been preserved at Mwananyamala Hospital. Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by the driver's lack of concentration and failure to observe proper driving regulations.
Mr Tobias has since been arrested and is being held for further investigation.
CP Muliro urged all drivers to exercise greater caution and adhere to traffic laws to avoid accidents and protect lives and property.
“The police continue to remind all road users to take traffic regulations seriously, as negligence on the road has fatal consequences,” he added.
