The Government of Tanzania has reiterated its commitment to strengthening national values in schools by urging teachers to go beyond academics and become responsible guardians and moral guides for students.

Speaking during the official opening of a special induction training for newly employed secondary school teachers specializing in Business and Vocational Education, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Daniel Mushi, called on teachers to uphold ethical standards and instill discipline among learners.

“While you are here to gain professional skills, I urge you to understand that your role extends far beyond teaching subjects you are also parents and mentors. We are witnessing rising cases of behavior that contradict Tanzanian values, and teachers must be on the front line in shaping students’ character,” said Prof. Mushi.

The government, he said, is prioritizing quality education through the recruitment and continuous training of new teachers, adding that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration remains steadfast in elevating the teaching profession and improving learning outcomes across the country.

Prof. Mushi also applauded the Tanzania Institute of Education (TET) for organizing the training and encouraged the institute to expand digital learning content through the Learning Management System (LMS) to ensure teachers continue learning and sharing knowledge through professional communities.

TET’s Director General, Dr. Aneth Komba, acknowledged the government’s support in funding teacher development initiatives and said the training will equip participants with vital classroom management and student assessment skills.

“These sessions are tailored to prepare you to handle real classroom challenges effectively. They will not only enhance your teaching abilities but also shape your approach to mentoring students,” she noted.

Representing fellow trainees, Mr. Doto Manyanga expressed appreciation for the long-term training, describing it as a timely investment in their careers.

“These skills will help us teach more effectively and become better guardians to our students,” he said.

The training program brings together 1,699 newly recruited secondary school teachers who will teach Vocational and Business Education subjects in public schools across Mainland Tanzania.

It forms part of the government’s broader agenda to boost the quality of education and preserve Tanzania’s moral and cultural values through the teaching profession.
