The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has cautioned exhibitors and organizers of this year’s 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba, to strictly control noise pollution and vibrations during the annual business showcase.

The warning was issued on June 26, 2025, by NEMC Senior Engineer Haji Kiselu during a pre-fair seminar involving key stakeholders.

Kiselu highlighted the health and social risks posed by excessive noise, urging participants to comply with environmental safety standards as preparations intensify for the fair, scheduled to begin on July 28 under the theme “The 49th International Trade Fair – Pride of Tanzania.”

“Noise pollution is not just a nuisance it can lead to permanent hearing loss, disturb public peace, increase accident risks, and, in some cases, even trigger pregnancy complications,” said Kiselu.

“We urge all participants to monitor and manage sound levels and structural vibrations at their booths to ensure public safety and preserve the integrity of the event.”he added

He stressed that while music and promotional activities are expected, they must remain within regulated decibel limits as set by national environmental guidelines.

The Regional Commissioner of Dar es Salaam, Albert Chalamila, also weighed in during the event, emphasizing that business operations must align with the broader national agenda of environmental sustainability.

“As a country, we are committed to sustainable development, and environmental conservation is central to that vision,” Chalamila said.

“President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration is championing a green economy. I call on all exhibitors to uphold practices that support this effort.”he added

Chalamila urged businesses to see environmental management not as a restriction, but as a foundation for long-term prosperity.

Responding to concerns raised by participants over noise monitoring during the trade fair, TanTrade Director General Latifa Mohamed Khamis affirmed that mechanisms are in place to enforce compliance throughout the event.

“We are working closely with NEMC to ensure that issues of noise and vibrations are effectively addressed,” she said.

“This trade fair is a source of national pride, and we must demonstrate professionalism and environmental responsibility at every level.”she added

Held annually at the Mwalimu Nyerere Fair Grounds, Sabasaba remains the country’s flagship trade and investment event, attracting hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond.
