With just six days remaining before the official opening, Iringa Region is finalizing preparations to host the 2025 editions of UMITASHUMTA and UMISSETA, Tanzania’s national competitions for primary and secondary school students in sports and academic activities.
The annual events, scheduled to commence on June 7, 2025, will bring together more than 7,000 participants from across mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
These competitions are organized under the coordination of the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports.
After being hosted in Tabora Region for three consecutive years, from 2022 to 2024, the national spotlight now turns to Iringa, which is preparing to receive delegations of students, coaches, education officers, and regional representatives for what is expected to be a vibrant and competitive series of events.
UMITASHUMTA involves pupils from primary schools, while UMISSETA focuses on secondary school students. Both platforms aim to strengthen the development of students through physical education, academic excellence, and character building.
The competitions cover a wide range of disciplines, including athletics, football, netball, volleyball, basketball, and traditional games, alongside academic and cultural exhibitions. Beyond showcasing talents, the events also encourage intercultural exchange, teamwork, and patriotism among students from different parts of the country.
According to organizers, this year’s edition is anticipated to be among the most inclusive and logistically ambitious, with Iringa’s infrastructure and hospitality sectors playing a key role in ensuring a smooth experience for all participants.
As the countdown continues, Iringa’s hosting of UMITASHUMTA and UMISSETA 2025 stands not only as a celebration of student potential but also as a testament to the enduring value of integrating sports and academics in shaping Tanzania’s future generation.
