A cutting-edge beekeeping exhibit unveiled by the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) at the Karibu Kili-Fair 2025 has emerged as a major highlight of East Africa’s largest tourism expo, drawing notable interest from the indigenous Hadzabe community.

The exhibit features a modern glass-fronted beehive designed to offer visitors a unique, up-close view of bee activity, promoting Tanzania’s burgeoning “bee tourism” sector.

This initiative aims to attract both domestic and international tourists to learn about apiculture, experience traditional honey harvesting practices, and purchase authentic forest honey products.

“Tanzania’s biodiversity extends far beyond its iconic wildlife like lions and elephants,” said Yusuph Tango, a TFS tourism officer.

“Bees play a crucial role in our ecosystem and cultural heritage, and it’s vital we share this story with the world.”he added

The Hadzabe, one of the world’s last remaining hunter-gatherer communities, maintain a symbiotic relationship with the honeyguide bird, which leads them to wild beehives.

After harvesting honey, they leave remnants of the comb as a gesture of gratitude to the bird a tradition underscoring their deep connection to nature.

“This relationship with bees has been part of our culture since time immemorial,” said a young Hadzabe visitor, expressing appreciation for TFS’s efforts to preserve and promote this heritage through innovative tourism.

The Karibu Kili-Fair, hosted at the Magereza Kisongo grounds, was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko.

The event gathers over 450 exhibitors from more than 30 countries, serving as a vital platform to promote Tanzania’s diverse tourism assets.

“Kili-Fair 2025 not only showcases our natural and cultural attractions but also connects local businesses with international markets,” Dr. Biteko said.

“It is a catalyst for job creation, revenue growth, and sustainable development rooted in our unique heritage.”he added
