Tanzania to spend TZS 19.6 million on Geita bus terminal to boost local revenue

Tanzania has allocated TZS19.6 billion ($7.5 million) for the construction of a modern bus terminal in Geita Town as part of its nationwide urban infrastructure upgrade under the second phase of the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness Project (TACTIC-2).

The new facility is expected to more than double annual municipal revenue from TSh172.6 million to TSh274.1 million, according to project coordinator Humphrey Kanyenye.

Construction, which begins this month, is scheduled for completion within 15 months.

Designed as a two-story complex, the terminal will feature passenger lounges, retail spaces, administration offices, prayer rooms, a childcare room, and 1.6 kilometers of paved roads.

Dedicated areas for buses, motorcycles, and three-wheelers (bajaji) are also included, alongside infrastructure for rainwater harvesting.

The investment aims to position Geita, a rapidly growing town near Lake Victoria and a center of gold mining and regional trade, as a key transportation and logistics hub in northwestern Tanzania.

“This project represents a strategic shift toward infrastructure-led revenue growth for local governments,” Kanyenye said on Friday at a contract signing event.

The announcement follows delays in the first phase of TACTIC, where only 45% of planned works, including 17 kilometers of roads, have been completed.

The Geita Municipal Council is now seeking to terminate its contract with Chinese contractor Sichuan Road and Bridge Group Corporation Ltd., referring the matter to the Attorney General.

Mayor Constantine Moland said the new terminal reflects a broader effort to restore confidence in local governance after years of stalled infrastructure delivery.

Tanzania is implementing a series of urban development programs in partnership with multilateral institutions to address rapid urbanization, improve mobility, and strengthen municipal finance.
