Government and Mkwawa Family unite to preserve historic Kalenga Site

 The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism,Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana (MP), has praised the family of Chief Adam Abdul Sapi Mkwawa II of the Hehe tribe for their continued collaboration with the government in preserving the rich and important legacy of Chief Mkwawa.

Speaking on June 5, 2025, in Dodoma at the closing of a consultative meeting between Ministry experts and the Mkwawa family, Chana emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding the historical Kalenga site once the stronghold of the legendary Hehe leader in Iringa Region.

She also used the opportunity to call upon regional and district authorities across the country to identify and document local tourism attractions in their areas and submit them to the Ministry for consideration, with the goal of formally recognizing and promoting them as official tourism destinations.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Permanent Secretary responsible for Natural Resources, CP Benedict Wakulyamba, Director of Antiquities Dr. Christowaja Ntandu, as well as senior officials from the Ministry and the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA).
