Dar es Salaam – In a landmark medical achievement, specialists at Temeke Regional Referral Hospital have successfully removed an 8.6-kilogram uterine tumor from a 34-year-old woman who had lived with the condition for over five years.

The complex three-hour surgery was performed on June 10, 2025, by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Joseph Kiani and Dr. Evance Polin, both seasoned consultants in obstetrics and gynecology.

The surgical team was supported by anesthesiologists and medical staff under the coordination of Dr. Eva Shanga.

According to Dr. Polin, the tumor had significantly affected the patient's quality of life and posed a growing health risk.

He explained that such tumors commonly fibroids or other benign growths can stem from various causes and tend to occur more frequently in women of reproductive age, especially those facing challenges with conception.

"Women who are trying to conceive or those with irregular reproductive health patterns should be particularly vigilant. Common symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, irregular cycles, severe cramps, and abdominal swelling that can mimic pregnancy," said Dr. Polin.

He emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and urged women experiencing these symptoms to seek prompt medical evaluation.

“Timely consultation with a gynecologist can make a significant difference in managing reproductive health issues before they escalate into more serious complications,” he added.

The patient, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons, is currently recovering well under close post-operative care.

The hospital’s successful operation marks a significant step in strengthening specialized women’s health services within regional public hospitals.
