The Pan-African media initiative “AfroMedia” has congratulated Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris on his recent appointment as the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations and Head of the African Mission in New York.
Founder of AfroMedia and anthropological researcher Hassan Ghazaly described the appointment as a powerful vote of confidence in Egypt’s diplomatic credibility and African leadership.
He said the selection underscores Cairo’s long-standing influence in multilateral diplomacy and its commitment to Africa’s peace, security, and development agenda.
“This is not only a recognition of Ambassador Idris’s exceptional diplomatic record, but also a reaffirmation of Egypt’s legacy in championing African causes on global platforms,” said Ghazaly.
Ghazaly praised Egypt’s historic role in African liberation, recalling how Cairo supported national leaders during the decolonization era by helping them voice their people’s struggles at the UN.
“Many of those leaders later became icons of independence across the Global South,” he noted.
He also emphasized that the appointment strengthens African representation in international institutions and enhances strategic cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations.
The development comes at a time when the UN is marking its 80th anniversary an occasion that echoes Egypt’s founding role in the organization and its continuous contribution to global diplomacy.
Ambassador Idris brings with him an extensive diplomatic career. He has previously served as Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the African Union.
In 2024, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed him to the UN Peacebuilding Fund’s Independent High-Level Advisory Board.
AfroMedia, founded in 2021 under the Global Solidarity Network, has positioned itself as a platform for strengthening journalistic and media collaboration across Africa.
Operating under the slogan “The Voice of Egypt… The Voice of Africa,” the initiative aims to build African media capacity, promote realistic portrayals of the continent, and support regional media partnerships.
Through training, coordinated media campaigns, and cross-cultural dialogue, AfroMedia seeks to bridge the gap between African nations and their people both Egyptians and non-Egyptians while reinforcing solidarity across the continent.
