Thabo Mbeki discusses blue economy and tourism in Africa

By The Respondent Reporter

The former President of South Africa, His Excellency Thabo Mbeki, participated in a significant discussion on advancing the blue economy and tourism in Africa, held in Dar es Salaam.

The event was guided by the theme “Enhancing the Blue Economy and Tourism for the African Continent.”

The discussions underscored the critical importance of sustainably managing Africa's oceans, lakes, and rivers, alongside promoting both regional and international tourism as powerful tools to strengthen the continent’s economy, generate employment, and reinforce African identity.

In his remarks, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Said Shaib Mussa, emphasized that Africa is at a pivotal moment in history, one that demands decisive action, unwavering commitment, and innovative solutions.

He stressed that the focus should be on critical areas of development, noting, “Action is no longer a choice; it is imperative to control the unchecked development of coastal regions.”he added

I believe this discussion will contribute significantly to Africa's strategic goals of creating, collaborating, and disseminating knowledge. We have research teams from universities and institutions across the continent addressing critical issues related to the ocean and marine ecosystems. In this gathering, they will showcase the progress made through their collaborations with counterparts from across Africa,” he continued.

Ambassador Mussa urged participants to remember the importance of cooperation, emphasizing that no single nation can confront these challenges alone.

He further highlighted that a collective commitment to collaboration leveraging our shared knowledge and experiences will be the foundation for the success of this strategy.

He called for unity, innovation, and the recognition that all Africans are the stewards of vital marine resources, which are essential for the survival of all life forms.

Mr. Thabo Mbeki is in Tanzania for various events organized by his Foundation to commemorate Africa Day, set for May 25, 2025.

The 15th Mbeki Foundation Lecture will take place on May 24, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, bringing together distinguished individuals and representatives from across the African continent.
