Tanzania promotes critical minerals investment in London

Tanzania is strengthening its position as a leading hub for mining sector development in Africa, by presenting compelling strategies for the sustainable development of its vast critical mineral resources. 

This message was delivered by the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals, Mr. Msafiri Mbibo, during his keynote address at the Investing in Tanzania’s Minerals Value Chain conference held in London.

The international conference, which brought together global investors, policymakers, mining experts, and representatives from development agencies, aimed to promote investment across Tanzania’s critical minerals value chain.

Speaking to the global audience, Mr. Mbibo emphasized Tanzania’s ambition to become a regional leader in clean energy minerals and value-added processing.

Tanzania is blessed with an abundance of critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, copper, graphite, and rare earth elements,” said Mr. Mbibo. 

These minerals are essential for the global transition to clean and sustainable energy technologies, and we are committed to ensuring they are developed in a way that benefits our nation and our people.”

He outlined Tanzania’s strategic priorities for the mining sector, which include expanding geological exploration, promoting local mineral processing industries, and ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the entire value chain.

We are not just focusing on extraction,” he noted. “Our vision is to develop a robust value chain — from exploration to refining — powered by innovation, environmental stewardship, and international collaboration.”

Mr. Mbibo also highlighted the Tanzanian government’s commitment to policy stability and investor confidence, stating that institutional capacity is being enhanced to effectively manage and regulate the fast-growing sector.

Our institutions are being equipped to uphold high standards of governance and accountability,” he explained. “We’re also fostering partnerships that align with our national development goals.”

The conference marked a key moment for Tanzania’s international outreach, as Mr. Mbibo acknowledged the role of the United Kingdom in hosting the event and fostering bilateral cooperation. He extended special thanks to the British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Her Excellency Marianne Young, for her continued support in deepening ties between the two nations.

Participants at the event expressed strong interest in Tanzania’s inclusive and forward-looking approach. Many commended the country’s focus on adding value to its mineral resources domestically and integrating local communities into the development process.

Mr. Mbibo is leading the Tanzanian delegation at the London summit, underscoring the country’s proactive efforts to attract responsible investment into its critical minerals sector  a sector that stands at the forefront of the global clean energy revolution.
