Dar es Salaam, — Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing renovation of the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The upgrades are part of the national preparations to host the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking during his inspection tour of the stadium on Saturday, the Prime Minister said he was pleased with the quality and speed of the work being done.

“I am pleased with the progress and quality of work done so far,” said Majaliwa. “The contractors have assured us that this stadium meets international requirements and will be ready before CHAN and AFCON begin.”

He was accompanied by the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi, and the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Gerson Msigwa.

The Prime Minister said the stadium is already in good condition and ready for both local and international matches.

Renovation works have focused on improving the pitch, changing rooms, seating areas, and other technical features to meet global standards.

This inspection follows an earlier tour by Majaliwa on April 7, 2025, in Zanzibar, where he visited Amani, Maisara, and Mao Zedong stadiums.

In mainland Tanzania, he has also visited the Law School field, Gymkhana grounds, and General Isamuhyo field in Dar es Salaam.

Majaliwa noted that hosting the two major tournaments is a great opportunity for the country.

“The decision by President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President Hussein Ali Mwinyi to allow these tournaments to take place in our country will help grow the sports sector and boost tourism,” he said.

He also emphasized the need to protect the improved facilities and ensure their sustainability.

“Now that we have invested heavily in upgrading these fields, it is our collective responsibility to protect and preserve them,” Majaliwa said.

The government aims to use CHAN and AFCON not only to showcase Tanzania’s ability to host large events but also to inspire more young people to join sports and keep the momentum going even after the tournaments end.
