Mirembe National Mental Health Hospital has stressed the critical role of physical exercise and a balanced diet in protecting and improving mental health.

On May 17, 2025, Dr. Enock Chagarawe, a mental health specialist at the hospital, shared that these practices are key components of the ongoing National Mental Health Campaign in Dodoma, which aims to increase public awareness about the importance of mental well-being.

Dr. Chagarawe explained that mental health is a state of emotional and psychological well-being, where individuals can engage with others in a healthy and connected manner.

He also noted that mental health issues often begin with stress, overwhelming thoughts, or anxiety, which may not immediately show clear signs of mental illness.

"Other symptoms include irrational beliefs, such as thinking one is cursed or being targeted by others, hearing voices that don't exist, withdrawing from social interactions, feeling worthless, or even contemplating suicide. Additionally, some individuals may frequently display anger or conflict-prone behaviors," Dr. Chagarawe elaborated.

He emphasized that individuals experiencing mental health issues should seek professional treatment in a hospital setting and, in some cases, may require hospitalization for accurate diagnosis and appropriate care. Psychological counseling provided by trained specialists is also essential in the healing process.

The campaign, which began in Dodoma, has already visited the regions of Singida and Iringa. The upcoming stops include Morogoro and Manyara. The campaign’s slogan is:"Mental Health is Health – Accept Yourself, Take Care of Yourself."

This initiative is part of a nationwide effort to change public attitudes towards mental health and encourage people to seek help early before problems escalate.
