On May 7, 2025, President Daniel Francisco Chapo of Mozambique embarked on a landmark three-day state visit to the United Republic of Tanzania, invited by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. This is President Chapo's first international trip since taking office on January 15, 2025, and marks a new chapter in the strong historical and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Reflecting on the shared history between Tanzania and Mozambique, President Samia Suluhu Hassan noted, “This visit is not just a formal engagement; it’s a celebration of our shared struggle for liberation in Southern Africa.

The relationship between our two nations is deeply rooted in the legacies of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere and the late President Samora Machel.”

For President Chapo, this visit is also a demonstration of his commitment to furthering regional cooperation.

“Mozambique and Tanzania have always stood together, whether in the fight for independence or in the pursuit of sustainable development,” he said upon arrival. “This visit marks the beginning of a stronger partnership as we work towards addressing both our countries’ common challenges.”

During the visit, the two leaders will oversee the inauguration of a new border post, which will significantly enhance trade and regional integration.

The project is expected to streamline commerce between the two countries and improve the livelihoods of local communities. President Hassan explained, “This border post will be a gateway not only for trade but also for fostering deeper cooperation in areas such as security, infrastructure, and people-to-people connections.”

In addition to the opening of the border post, President Chapo will also visit strategic development projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, a key initiative within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Gateway Project.

President Chapo emphasized, “The SGR is vital for the region’s economic future, and I am eager to see the progress of this infrastructure project, which will connect our countries and enhance regional trade.”

As part of his itinerary, President Chapo will also visit Zanzibar, where he will meet with the President of Zanzibar, further strengthening ties between the islands and the mainland.

Both this visit symbolizes the growing cooperation between Mozambique and Tanzania, as both nations work to build a prosperous future through enhanced collaboration and mutual support.
