Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo, has called on local government authorities across the country to invest in the development of modern sports facilities, particularly football stadiums.

Prof. Mkumbo made the remarks yesterday during the closing ceremony of the Higher Education and Samia Cup tournament, held at the KMC Complex Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

He noted that the popularity of sports—especially football—among Tanzanians is undeniable, and local councils should match this enthusiasm with proper infrastructure.

I commend Kinondoni Municipal Council for establishing this stadium. Honestly, I felt a bit envious, and I’m now determined to ensure that Ubungo District also builds a quality stadium,” said Prof. Mkumbo.

He also praised the organizers, Conel Investment, for successfully coordinating the tournament, and extended his gratitude to Twende na Mama Sports Foundation for their support in making the event a success.

Speaking at the event, Kinondoni District Commissioner Saad Mtambule thanked the organizers for utilizing the stadium and encouraged continued collaboration to promote sports development in support of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s broader vision.

He highlighted the role of sports in national development, saying, “Sports create jobs, drive economic activity, promote culture, and support the arts. We’re proud to be part of this journey.”

Mtambule further announced plans for future infrastructure projects:This is just the beginning. In the coming years, we plan to construct another modern stadium in the Bunju area, along the road to Bagamoyo,” he revealed.

Cornelio Swai, Director General of Conel Investment and lead organizer of the tournament, expressed his appreciation to the government and to President Samia for her support particularly for allowing the tournament to bear her name.

He also acknowledged the participation and cooperation of various stakeholders including universities, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Dar es Salaam Regional Football Association (DRFA), and the National Sports Council (BMT).

Kassim Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer of Twende na Mama Sports Promotion, also expressed gratitude for the support from President Samia, noting that her involvement was key to the tournament’s success.

We are now planning something even bigger, with future editions expanding to include institutions in Zanzibar,” he said.
